What is professional yacht sanitization?

Yacht sanitization is the certified hygiene treatment of the systems that keep a vessel liveable — fresh-water tanks and distribution lines, air conditioning and ventilation, galley extraction hoods — combined with ozone treatment of the interiors. It protects guests and crew, prevents Legionella and preserves the value and charter-readiness of the boat.

Onboard systems work in conditions no building ever faces: long lay-up periods, water standing in tanks and lines, high humidity, and intermittent use. That combination is exactly what bacteria and biofilm need to take hold — quietly, while the boat looks immaculate.

Why a yacht is a perfect habitat for bacteria

Yacht sanitization: Legionella risk from shower heads and onboard water systems — Shower heads and taps turn contaminated water into breathable aerosol — the main route of Legionella infection.

The most serious risks on board are the ones you cannot see. Water that has been standing in tanks and lines during a lay-up, condensation inside air-conditioning ducts, grease film in the galley hood: each is a microbiological reservoir that reaches guests and crew through the taps, the showers and the air vents.

How we sanitize a yacht, step by step

Everything happens at berth and around your schedule. We inspect first, agree a plan with the captain and crew, clean mechanically, sanitize with ozone and prove the result with laboratory analyses and a certificate.

Onboard survey and system inspection

We inspect the fresh-water system, the air conditioning and the galley extraction at berth, with water sampling where needed. You know the real condition of your systems before anything is quoted.

Our certified sanitization method, on camera

This is our certified method for sanitizing air-conditioning systems — the same protocol we apply to the AC units and ducting on board, filmed during a real intervention.

Onboard air conditioning runs in a salty, humid environment and stays off for months at a time: exactly the conditions in which mould and bacteria colonise ducts and units. Cleaning the visible filters is not enough — the system has to be treated from the inside.

Rules and references

Legionella control on vessels follows the Italian ISS guidelines (2015) and the WHO Guide to Ship Sanitation. For crews, a yacht is also a workplace: D.Lgs 81/2008 makes the owner and operator responsible for onboard health conditions, while UNI EN 15780 defines cleanliness classes for ventilation and air-conditioning ducts.

Yacht sanitization: what owners and captains ask us

When should a yacht be sanitized?

At the key moments of the season: after the winter lay-up, before the charter season, at major crew or guest turnarounds, and whenever there is an anomaly — odours from the AC, cloudy water, a positive water test. The onboard survey tells you which systems actually need treatment and which can wait.

Which systems on board are treated?

The fresh-water system (tanks, distribution lines, showers and taps), the air conditioning and ventilation, and the galley extraction hoods. Ozone treatment also sanitizes cabins and interiors as part of the intervention.

Can it be done at berth, without hauling out?

Yes. Our equipment operates dockside in any Italian marina, and the work is planned with the captain and crew around turnaround, provisioning and maintenance — some activities run during the turnaround itself, others are scheduled when the yacht is free.

Is ozone safe for interiors, fabrics and teak?

Yes, when applied professionally. Ozone is generated on site, used at controlled concentration while spaces are unoccupied, and then decays naturally back into oxygen. Unlike chemical biocides, it leaves no residues on upholstery, wood or surfaces — and no smell other than clean air.

Do you release documentation valid for charters, surveys and audits?

Yes. Every intervention ends with an official sanitization certificate, laboratory analyses and a full report — documentation you can file in the yacht’s technical records and show to charter brokers, surveyors and port authorities.

Where do you operate, and can we deal with you in English?

We intervene in every Italian marina and shipyard, with an average response time of 48 hours. International owners, captains and management companies are followed in English from the first survey to the final report.

When was your onboard water system last tested?

The onboard survey is free, is done at berth and does not commit you to anything. Either your systems are fine — and you will have it in writing — or they are not, and you will know before your guests do.
